Corbiere Radio Tower

6 Adults

Holiday accommodation with a wow factor!

During the Occupation of Jersey three huge observation towers were built by the Germans as part of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall defences comprising 15,000 structures stretching from Norway to the Loire. Their purpose was to direct artillery fire against targets out to sea. One of these, La Corbière Radio Tower, is now available as holiday accommodation with a wow factor. Constructed from more than 5,000 bags of cement, this is a truly imposing site from both land and sea. Its location commands excellent views over Jersey, the Gulf of St Malo and more closely, Corbière Lighthouse which stands on a outcrop of beautiful pink granite rocks just offshore. The lighthouse was once manned but is now remotely operated. You can walk there along a causeway during low tide.

From the tower’s rather functional beginning comes accommodation that is unique to Jersey. The tower has six floors with one small room on each floor, but the climb to the top room is more than worth the effort. The look-out centre that once was the heart of the tower’s activity now offers a jaw-dropping 360 degrees view that must be seen to be believed, converted into a stunning living/dining area that is as quirky as it is spectacular.

Three shower rooms (with WC), a kitchen and three adult bunked bed bedrooms have been made out of the five floors that lead the way up to the tower centre. Parking is just outside the building so you can use your own car or choose to take advantage of the local buses. It is perfectly situated for cliff walking, watching passing boats, beaches and bird watching but is close to main roads leading to restaurants and beaches.

The Radio Tower is close to Corbiere Lighthouse and light flash will occur during the night. During periods of very poor visibility the lighthouse foghorn will sound at regular intervals.  Due to the property's unique and significant history the tower has been sympathetically restored in the Bauhaus style.  Please note that due to the design of the building, if the wind is strong, it may still be heard inside the building.

Children of all ages welcome.

Customer Comments

"Visited this tower in the 80s when it was run by the coastguard for a tour, lovely to return to stay. Just two in our party so each had a bedroom and own bathroom. Little welcome pack provided. Views from the top are simply stunning, but be prepared for stairs."

"You have to stay here simply for the experience, the accommodation and furnishings are scaled around the shape of this unusual building. The top stairs are narrow, but once you're there the views are amazing and has to be one of the best in the British Isles sweeping the 5 miles of St Ouen's Beach to Corbiere Lighthouse. Nice selection of basic groceries on arrival, ideal to have bathrooms on every floor and an extra fridge on the top floor.  Ideal for a short stay."

"Quirky accommodation but superb location.  Almost 360 degrees views from the top, great heating, good quality linens, welcome groceries, excellent restaurant on the doorstep and on a good bus route.  Due to the low doorways, taller people need to duck under the low doorways and the top staircase is spiral and steep. Bedrooms are small due to the shape of the building, but this is to be expected"

"In summary you stay here for the views and getting away from it and to experience staying in an unusual building. Great for friends to have a bedroom with own private bathroom, beds are custom built to fit the curve of the tower and underfloor heating and heated towel rails prevents cold/damp towels. Great to have a fridge in kitchen and lounge.  If you have binoculars take them, the views are breath-taking."

"What a terrific place to stay, fantastic views and such a novel experience, may not suit everyone especially if you do not like stairs, but we loved it. Once settled on the top floor you can just watch the world go by, sun rise to sun set. Landscape photographers dream location, lovely walks on your doorstep and a good pub restaurant close by.  If you're looking for somewhere different to stay, well this is it - at least try it once anyway.  We would certainly go again."

"Booked this for our party but didn't tell them where they were staying. Initially their reactions were mixed, but all agreed the location was terrific. It turned out we spent hours on the top floor regardless of time of day or weather - it was always fantastic. It is unique, we'll always talk about this property and all the beautiful parts of Jersey.  And the Jersey Ice Cream van that calls to the lighthouse parking lot was a MUST!"
