Fort Leicester

8 Adults

Fort Leicester is a magnificent 19th century fort that once was home to a defence force protecting Jersey’s North coast from French invasion. While conditions in the fort may once have been sparse, this is certainly no longer the case with a level of comfort that does justice to the beautiful views that it commands.

The stunning location of the fort immediately lends itself for use as holiday accommodation. The fort is split into two separate areas. A German searchlight position, added during the Occupation years of the Second World War, on the lower level houses the kitchen, lounge and dining area with ‘patio’ doors opening on to a balcony area with wonderful views of Bouley Bay, the Echréhous Reef and the distant coast of France. This area can also be used for extra sleeping accommodation should you want to share the experience with friends.

On the lower level of the 1836 guardhouse there is a bathroom and a second bedroom, while the delightful main bedroom, with open fireplace, is on the upper floor. The Fort sleeps six comfortably but can accommodate eight and includes a double bedroom (plus daybed), adult bunks in the second bedroom and a sofa bed in the sitting room. The fort also boasts two semi-private garden spaces for long summer evenings and drawn out barbeques. This accommodation is ideal for families wanting self catering with a difference, sailors, fishermen, divers and those with an appreciation of history and heritage looking for an unusual holiday destination. From walking Jersey’s outstanding cliff paths to swimming in the sea, you are not far from any holiday pursuit that takes your fancy or simply relaxing in the quiet away from the bustle of home. There is a steep path and steps leading up to the fort. The fort is on split-levels so there are steps within the grounds. The property is adjacent to cliffs and has high walls and long drops. All rooms are externally accessed.

This property is not suitable for toddlers or very young children.

Bouley Bay Hill Climb

Guests enjoy free admission to these Jersey Motor Cycle and Light Car Club events which will be held on the hill.  Access in and out on these days is by arrangement with the course marshals.

The first hill climb was held in 1920 when the road surface was concrete and the club had just been formed. The idyllic setting on Jersey’s north coast, with the French coastline visible on a clear day is unsurpassed for its atmosphere and spectacle in British hill climbing. The original course was 1065 yards in length but this was reduced to the current 1011 in 1949. Demanding, technical and challenging are just a few of the descriptions used by the UK competitors who visit each year for the British National Hill climb championship. Unlike many UK events the JMC & LCC hill climbs are open to all types of machinery from cars to sidecars and motorbikes to karts - all are welcome to entertain the crowds. With its mixture of blind bends through high banked tree lined corners to the tight hairpins towards the top, Bouley Bay has everything to challenge the best in the business. For spectators the high banks above the top half of the hill are a natural amphitheatre looking down the hill as the competitors race up.

Customer Comments

"An interesting property for friends or families with older children. All the rooms are externally accessed but this didn't cause any problems for our group. Located in a lovely bay with a pub close by.  A great experience".

"A chance to step back in history and experience some breath-taking views"

"A truly amazing experience, hadn't realised the rooms, living area and bathroom are not in any way connected, so you need to walk outdoors to access different areas but this simply adds to its charm. Car certainly recommended. My friends and I truly loved staying here, a weekend we will never forget."
